Some areas are worse hit than others. Places like Scotland are still seeing increases in house prices. Aberdeen in particular is booming, likely due to the oil activity. Housing at the higher end of the market seem largely unaffected too. You are spot on about the reticence of home owners in facing up to losing the value in their home. I sympathise, house price is an emotive issue, especially when you have spent money, time and love on your home. However I think we potential sellers need to realise that any house will sell at the RIGHT price.
