People from India often ask, "Why would anyone look for love online?"
That's a good question. If your attitude about love, companionship, dating, and marriage are the same as traditional Indian attitudes then you might be wondering what online dating is all about as well.
There are some good reasons why Indian people might want to go online for companionship, but before we state those reasons let us first say what online dating is not.
It is not about loose morals and countercultural behavior. Many Indian people who use online dating services adhere to traditional Indian values in religion and family.
But Western Indians realize that finding companionship is more challenging in a pluralistic society where they are more likely to encounter someone from another tradition than someone from their own. Traditional arranged marriages have worked well in India for thousands of years, but we're not in India any more Toto.
For some Indians, traditional marriage arrangements will work, but for just as many, online dating and matrimonial services offer additional options for love and companionship. Many Indians who use the services still involve parents and older members of the family in narrowing down their choices. They use the assisted marriage strategy where choices are made for potential candidates and the final decision made by parental consent and guidance. This kind of system is a compromise between the traditional arranged marriage and the newfangled love marriage arrived at by Western courtship standards.

Indian-Americans looking for love and friendship can find their interest online.
Opportunities for Indians living in the U.S. just keep getting better and the
Internet has expanded those opportunities beyond belief.
According to
Wikipedia, Indian-Americans are among the highest socioeconomic class of all
minorities and have the highest percentage of minority achievers. But that has
not always been the case. In the early 20th century, Indians had a difficult
time integrating into American culture. In 1917, the Barred Zone Act kept Asians
from migrating to the U.S. A 1923 Supreme Court decision upheld the view that
Asian Indians could not become Americans. It was not until 1946 that
Indian-Americans gained the right to once again emigrate to American
shores.
Since that time, Indian-Americans have achieved some notorious
influences in the U.S. Perhaps the most famous Indian-American is Deepak Chopra,
who has brought knowledge and acceptance of the Hindu religion to the U.S. and
has a wide following even among Caucasians and other U.S. ethnic cultures. Now,
Indian-Americans can live a life free of relative oppression within the U.S.
framework.
Indian-American culture has even nosed its way into the
American mainstream somewhat. It is not uncommon to find references to Hinduism,
meditation, Indian fashion, music, food, and Indian dance in the mainstream
media. Indian-Americans even have their own cultural and news media to
communicate the values and traditions of the subculture. These truths make it
more rewarding to be an Indian-American entering the 21st century.
